Geekend Update: The top five comic book news stories of the week (09-05-09)

Geekend Update is a weekly wrap-up of the top five comic book news stories published by the Columbus Comic Book Examiner, based solely on the number of page views each story had.

In a week that saw what will probably one of the top business news stories of the year, the number #1 story this week was not about the Disney/Marvel acquisition. Plenty of other stories were, but not #1. What was the top story? Read on!

Deadman Collection/ Neal Adams

5. DC Comics’ Deadman movie is in the works
Warner Bros. announced that Danish director Nikolaj Arcel had signed on to direct Deadman, the story of a circus acrobat who is murdered, and who’s spirit is given the ability to possess the living in order to discover who his murderer is. There are surface similarities to films like Ghost and the upcoming Lovely Bones, but with Guillermo del Toro producing, the tone will probably be much darker. Later in the week it was announced that a movie about another DC character, Lobo, will go into production early next year with Guy Ritchie directing.

Howard the Duck MAX #1/ Steve Gerber

4. Breaking the Internet in half: Disney buys Marvel
After Disney announced its acquisition of Marvel Comics on Monday, the reaction on the message boards was swift, dramatic, and characteristically reactionary. While some were positive, many of the posted comments in the first 24 hours after the announcement ranged from the cautiously trepidatious to the “The sky is falling!” This article was the first of several over the course of the week beginning to examine the reactions of comic book fans and addressing some of the accusations they were making about Disney.

The Muppets

3. What does the Disney/Marvel acquisition really mean? (Part 2 of 3)
Not every acquisition Disney has made over the past ten years or so has gone as well as it could. There were a number of other properties that have been allowed to languish in Disney’s vaults, including one comic book company that Disney purchased in order to acquire one single property, then only published two books with that property.

Howard the Duck MAX #1/ Steve Gerber

2. What does the Disney/Marvel acquisition really mean (Part 1 of 3)
On the other hand, the characterization that The Walt Disney Company exists solely to present the family friendly image of Uncle Walt and Mickey Mouse walking down Main Street USA in Disneyland is wrong on a fundamental level. Disney is one of the top two or three media companies in the world, and they create entertainment for all ages and tastes.

And what was the #1 story of the week? Not what you'd think:

Magog #1/Howard Porter

1. Why “Magog?” Why not?
This wee saw the release of Magog #1 from DC Comics. Magog was originally created to characterize the excess and “extreme” mentality of super-hero comic books in the 90s. The Magog of this comic book is not quite the same character as the on 15 years ago, although they share the same level of hyper-violence, and that shows you how much the industry in general, and DC Comics in particular, has changed over the years.
