Do you need some luck-o-the-irish?! Savannah is host to the second largest St. Patrick's Day celebration in the United States. This three day party is something that everyone should see at least once in their life. For the weekend of March 17, everyone in Savannah is Irish.
The place to be during St. Patty's Day is River Street. Located right off of the river, River Street is a collection of bars that line the river as you stroll, or stumble, down the cobblestone street. Olympia Cafe sits right beside the Hyatt hotel.
When you walk into the middle entrance of Olympia Cafe, the first thing that catches your eyes will be about 10-15 beautiful Greek/ Bulgarian/ Polish/ Czech Republic women ready to serve you a beer. The beer that Olympia offers ranges from Bud Light on draft, all the way to authentic Greek beer (Mythos). Look to the left and the right of the entrance, and you just may see nurses ready to give you a green-colored 'shot' in a syringe. Olympia has been know to have dressed-up nurses 'on call' to take care of all of your ailments.
Not in the mood for beer? Need something stronger? Olympia is not only known for the delicious beer, but also the wine. They have hard-to-find Greek wine like Retsina, Xinomavro, Amethystos, Moschofilero, and Santorini. They offer a full bar filled with Greek beer, draft beer, bottled beer, mixed drinks, top-shelf liquor, champagne, and sparkling wines.
If you find yourself starting to get the drunken-munchies, wander next door to the 'to-go' section of Olympia and grab a quick bite to eat. They offer genuine Greek foods in just minutes. Grab a gyro or even a cheeseburger to soak up some of that alcohol!
Whatever you do when you visit Savannah for St. Patrick's Day, make sure you stop in to Olympia and tell the owners (Nick Pappas and Vascillis Varlagas) "hello". Also, make sure that you bring a camera!
Olympia Cafe is located on 5 East River Street. For reservations, call (912) 233-3131.
