Once again, the Indian River County Commission has proclaimed Thanksgiving week, Christian Heritage Week. Break out the Jesus beards and pop the bubbly.
Whereas, the preamble to the Constitution of the state of Florida makes mention of Almighty God; and whereas George Washington said something or other about the pure spirit of Christianity; and whereas Thomas Jefferson said something about liberties being a gift of God; and whereas George Mason, some guy from Virginia, said something about Christian forbearance; and whereas the people we just mentioned and some other Americans were great people and definitely Christians; let's have a week to proclaim our Christian heritage. And let's do it during the week of Thanksgiving so everyone will be giving thanks and we can claim it's all about Christianity.
Every year, the Indian River Family Association, an affiliate of the American Family Association, asks for and receives "proclamations for Christian Heritage Week from the Vero Beach City Council and the Indian River County Commission."
Of course, these government agencies proclaim all sorts of silly things.
The Indian River County Commission also proclaimed November 18-24 National Farm-City Week, whereas American farmers and ranchers produce things. The entire month of November is Adoption Awareness Month in IRC, whereas the Children's Home Society of Florida helps kids.
So let's do it. Break out the Mary and Joseph costumes. Run the Christian flag up a pole and let's all sing about Jesus and thank Jefferson for being such a Godly man. Let's browbeat non-Christians, gays, those who are pro-choice, women, and outsiders with Christianity's majority and obvious favored status. And most of all, let's don our Jesus gear and spend the week feeding the poor and casting out demons so everyone will know this is Christian Heritage Week. Woot!
Then let's eat turkey and shop our brains out. Because, let's face it, after the commissioners sign, and revel in the godly afterglow, the world goes on as it ought--and that's probably what's got the proclaimers so peeved. They talk and proclaim, but society marches on toward secularism, freedom, and acceptance without them. Oh, well, they've always got next year.
