2K Games and Gearbox Software announced their newest intellectual property, “Battleborn,” via a press release obtained by Examiner today.

The game, set to be the featured story in the August edition of Game Informer magazine will be released on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 system and PC in 2016, according to the press release.

While little else is known about the game, Gearbox spilled enough beans to make it obvious that it’ll be in the vein of the “Borderlands” series, but with plenty of different gameplay elements to distinguish itself.

“If Borderlands 2 is a shooter-looter, Battleborn is a hero-shooter,” said Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software, said in today’s press release. “As a genre-fused, hobby-grade, co-operative and competitive FPS exploding with eye-popping style and an imaginative universe, 'Battleborn' is the most ambitious video game that Gearbox has ever created.”

Developed by the team behind “Borderlands 2,” “Battleborn,” another first-person-shooter hybrid, is set in a not-too-distant, wild-sci-fi universe and according to the release, will feature a co-op campaign, multi-player matches and a cool cast of characters. Between the success of both Gearbox and 2K, both companies have set lofty goals for the upcoming game.

“Battleborn represents the combined might of the development and publishing teams behind the success of Borderlands 2, which to date has sold-in more than 9-million units worldwide and has become 2K’s highest-selling game of all time,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K said in today’s press release. “The size, scope, and ambition of Battleborn are unlike any other title in 2K’s history, and the result is a defining next-gen co-operative experience.”
