Gear review: The Teva Forge Pro

The Gear:

The Forge Pro is an outdoor multisport shoe from Teva. The Forge Pro is comprised of a synthetic leather and mesh upper and a compression molded EVA midsole with external Shoc Pad. The shoe also features a Mush infused insole, and a spider 365 outsole with multi-directional lugs.

The Test:

According to the folks at Teva, if you're heading for adventure but aren't sure what you'll run into, the Forge Pro is for you. After about 5 months of kicking around in them, I would agree. The shoe isn't specifically designed to be a hiking boot, trail runner, or rock climbing shoe; but it performs all three tasks (and more), rather admirably.

For me, three things stand out about the shoe. For starters, they are comfortable. Teva used their signature Mush feel, and adapted it to the sock liners of the Forge Pro. The energy transferring Shoc Pad in the heel cup provided a nice spring-forward feel when trail running. Also, the lacing system is fantastic. The laces are hyper-adjustable and produce a custom feeling, snug fit.

Secondly, the shoes are indeed versatile. I used them for just about every outdoor endeavor through summer and fall, to include backpacking. They did great, but I might not take them for anything more than a night or two. They just aren't designed for it. They are not waterproof, but Teva produces a waterproof version of the Forge Pro if that's a priority.

Lastly, the sole of the Forge Pro is quite grippy; even more so than many shoes designed specifically for hiking. Wet rocks are an almost constant issue in the Northwest, and the spider 365 technology of the outsole performed very well.

The Bottom Line:

The Forge Pro from Teva excels in comfort, versatility, and outsole stability. If you're heading outside with a big question mark about what you'll be doing or where you'll end up, then Forge Pro is a good choice.
