Gear review: The Response Trail 17 from Adidas

THE GEAR:

The Response Trail 17 is the latest version of Adidas' light-weight trail running shoe. The Response Trail 17 is comprised of a very breathable air mesh upper, a full length adiPRENE midsole, and a TRAXION lugged rubber outsole. The shoe has a moisture wicking CLIMALITE lining and a removable EVA insole.

THE TEST:

Admittedly, this was the first time I had worn anything from Adidas since high school. Though known for quality footwear, Adidas just wasn't a name that jumped into my head when I thought about hiking or trail running shoes. That was before the Response Trail 17.

I was initially taken with the comfortable fit. My feet are a bit on the wide side, which can produce hot spots quickly in most shoes. The mesh upper of the Response Trail 17 conforms itself snuggly around the foot, locking it in while eliminating potential blister problems.

The shoes proved to be rugged and durable yet very cushioning; providing great comfort without being "too soft". The sole gripped nicely and held its own on a variety of surfaces. They are, however, definitely designed for dry terrain.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

The Response Trail 17 shoes from Adidas are undoubtedly some of the lightest feeling, most comfortable trail runners I've tried this year. They are ideal for day hikes of any length, and at $85 they are perhaps the best bang for the buck available.
