Gear Review: The LOWA S-Trail GTX

The Gear:

The S-Trail GTX is a versatile, lightweight, waterproof trail running shoe from LOWA. The S-Trail GTX features a synthetic microfiber upper for breathability coupled with a Gore-Tex waterproof lining. The midsole is a bi-density EVA that utilizes LOWA's Monowrap construction for stability. The shoes also feature LOWA's Spine proprietary sole technology that works with the natural rolling movement of your stride, and an Ortholite footbed.

The Test:

I had the pleasure of reviewing and recommending LOWA's Zephyr GTX Lo as part of a holiday buying guide last November. That hiking boot was my introduction to LOWA, and it left quite an impression on me. So I was very interested in the prospect of reviewing a pair of trail runners from LOWA to see if the quality of their trail shoes was comparable to that of their boots. The answer is unequivocally, yes.

The uppers provide durable yet forgiving protection around the toes and side of the foot, while also maintaining a high level of breathability. The soles are ideal, ensuring enough support to hike over rocky trails without fatigue but are comfortable enough to hike long distances. The S-Trail kept my feet warm and dry on wet Northwest days, but again has the breathability to transition right into the heat of summer. The shoes have proven to be every last bit as durable and well made as the LOWA boots.

The Bottom Line:

The S-Trail GTX from LOWA is my favorite kind of shoe to hike in. They are lightweight and breathable with a very rugged and supportive sole. I prefer to do most of my hiking in trail runners, but find that many sacrifice support in the name of comfort and weight. The S-Trail GTX is light enough (1.5 lbs for a pair of size 9 men's) but makes no such compromise.
