The Gear:
The Kotey 35 degree is a lightweight, thermally efficient, mummy-style sleeping bag from Eureka. Ideal for backpacking, the Kotey measures 82" x 32" x 21" and comes in a compression stuff sack that reduces the carrying size of the bag to 7" x 14". The Kotey features Eureka's Rteq insulation, a full length draft tube, and an anti-snag zipper stitchguard.
The Test:
I have a love/hate relationship with sleeping bags designed for backpacking. Obviously the lighter the better, but how much comfort are you willing to sacrifice? I'm personally not a big fan of mummy-style sleeping bags, as I don't like being that constricted. But again, this is a concession that must be made in the name of carrying everything you need on your back.
Happily, while the Kotey has a weight of only 2 lbs 1 oz, there is just enough wiggle room in the legs for me to move around comfortably. The bag was long enough to fit my 6 foot 2 inch frame, and there was just enough room in the shoulders to maneuver around. By no means will you be sprawling out in the middle of the night, but the Kotey suited my comfort / bag weight ratio perfectly.
The 35 degree rating of the bag seemed pretty on point. Bear in mind that there is no standardized system for the temperature ratings of sleeping bags. I can, however, say that I slept comfortably in 40 degree weather in a t-shirt and underwear.
The Bottom Line:
As with all backpacking gear, finding just the right blend of functionality, weight, and comfort is key. The Kotey 35 degree sleeping bag from Eureka finds a good balance, and does so affordably.
