The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) along with Rockmart and Polk County police are investigating the possible shooting death of male victim whose body was discovered in a ditch near the intersection of Morgan Valley Road and Second Street in Rockmart earlier today.
Polk County police initially responded to the area after the Polk County 911 center received calls from area residents who reported hearing gunshots fired in the area.
A Polk County police officer investigating the gunshots located the body of a male subject lying in a ditch and determined that the male was deceased. Rockmart Police were notified to respond to the scene. Polk County Coroner Trey Litesey was also dispatched to the scene to take custody of the body.
The identity of the man has not been officially released at this time. The victim is believed to be 19-20 years of age. The case is under investigation as is being treated as a homicide. At least one shell casing was located near the body.
The body was transported to the Georgia Crime Lab Division of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigations investigative division will be assisting local agencies with the investigation.
