A co-founder of the National Capital Tea Party Partiots, Doug Mainwaring opposes same-sex marriage. As reported yesterday by On Top magazine online, Mainwaring, “warned...that gay marriage will “undefine” children.” Mainwaring appeared with other speakers yesterday in Washington D.C. as part of the National Organization for Marriage's rally at the National Mall.
“As a gay man, I can state categorically, it is not homophobic to oppose same-sex marriage. To the Supreme Court, legislators and jurists around the country: Slow this train down,” said Mainwaring.
The issue of gay marriage, or same-sex marriage has become a prominent issue lately as the Supreme Court has been in oral arguments over California's Proposition 8 that banned gay marriage as well as the Defense of Marriage Act signed into law by President Clinton.
In a statement he published earlier this month, Mainwaring wrote, “I wholeheartedly support civil unions for gay and lesbian couples, but I am opposed to same-sex marriage. Because activists have made marriage, rather than civil unions, their goal, I am viewed by many as a self-loathing, traitorous gay. So be it. I prefer to think of myself as a reasoning, intellectually honest human being.”
He further clarified his view on marriage and the importance of gender in marriage as well.
In that same statement, Mainwaring further stated, “The notion of same-sex marriage is implausible, yet political correctness has made stating the obvious a risky business. Genderless marriage is not marriage at all. It is something else entirely.”
Mainwaring asserts the issue at debate over same-sex marriage is not one of rights but one of defining the word marriage. On that basis he advocates civil unions for same-sex couples and marriage for heterosexual couples.
He concluded his statement with his views on the definition of the word marriage, writing, “Marriage is not an elastic term. It is immutable. It offers the very best for children and society. We should not adulterate nor mutilate its definition, thereby denying its riches to current and future generations.”
