Gay penguins get chick, become surrogate parents in adoption (Video)

Harbin Polar Land: Gay penguins given a chick are surrogate parents in China. Zoo officials say they will care for a twin baby from an inexperienced mom. Buddy and Pedro, another pair in Toronto, Canada just got some competition. Another book perhaps?

Remember the gay penguins separated in Toronto, Canada or Roy and Silo?

According to the Huffington Post, a pair of male avian BFFs in northern China has been given a chance to showcase their parenting skills through adoption. Male penguins are known to be the main caretakers of the eggs hatched by females. After the rigor of laying an egg during the hatching season, mom takes to the water and searches for food. Males then take over incubating the egg. Imagine that?

When a struggling mom recently hatched two eggs (penguins are most successful with one), Harbin Polar Land Zoo officials stepped in. They gave a pair of gay penguins a chick to adopt. They believe this gives the twin a good chance at survival, given the notorious reputation of the pair stealing eggs during the hatching season.

This story is somewhat similar to one involving two other gay penguin pairs. Roy and Silo, a “gay” pair at New York’s Central Park Zoo was given a rejected egg after they desperately tried to hatch a rock, for crying out loud.

Then there's the story of Buddy and Pedro of Toronto, Canada. Zoo officials came under fire from all around the world when they tried to separate the two males after they showed same sex attraction.

Update on Canadian pair Buddy and Pedro: Gay penguins reunite

It only took two weeks for officials at the Toronto Zoo to realize it erred in trying to separate these two adorable avian friends.

After a public outcry, they decided it was best to reunite the birds, while reminding critics they separated them to help pass on "good genes" with male-female mating. It seems the world is slowly becoming more progressive, even if it involves homosexual behavior.

Hopefully the gay penguins, chick and all are happy, healthy, and given a chance to be and do what their instincts tell them. Even in the animal world, adoption works.
