Gay Marriage: Bills passed in WA and NJ, will they stick?

Both the states of Washington and New Jersey have passed bills in favor of gay marriage, but will they stick? Governor Chris Gregoire of Washington made it her personal mission to get the gay marriage bill passed through both her Senate and House of Representatives. It was no surprise when she signed the bill into effect on February 13, 2012. In New Jersey however, it's a different story.  While celebrity backers such as actress Anne Hathaway and her gay brother Michael Hathaway were very vocal on their push for the bill, others were just as vocal against it. Governor Chris Christie has openly threatened to veto the same sex marriage bill as soon as it reaches his desk. Will he keep his word?

The gay marriage bill in Washington State is set to take effect 90 days from the day governor Gregoire signed it. The same would be true of the New Jersey bill if Governor Chris Christie signs it into law. However he has stated the following

"If the bill comes to my desk, I am vetoing it," Christie said last week. "And I will use every resource that I have at my disposal to make sure that my veto is sustained."

Gay Siblings: Anne Hathaway wants Jersey gay marriage

With those words, Christie has sparked great controversy. At a time when many states are considering passing similar bills, including California and potentially Maryland, his open statement to stop the bill in its tracks is unexpected. Many are wondering if he will truly veto the bill once it reaches his desk, or if he’s just trying to scare others.

At the opposite side of things is Gregoire who has actually attempted to reach out to Christie in an effort to encourage the New Jersey Governor to pass the bill and take strides towards recognizing his gay and lesbian constituents as first class citizens through equal marriage rights. What is your take in things? Do you think he’ll sign it? Or will he keep his word and veto the historic same-sex marriage bill? Have thoughts on this article you'd like to share?  Leave a comment below or connect via TwitterFacebook, or Belky's Blog!
