Gay fiction pioneer Gore Vidal passes away at age 86 (Photos)

In 1948 author Gore Vidal shocked the world with the publishing of his novel The City and the Pillar, one of the first major works to depict a homosexual relationship openly. The novelist, playwright and intellectual passed away July 31, 2012 of complications from pneumonia. Vidal leaves behind an amazing body of work, consisting of countless novels, plays, screenplays, memoirs and essays. Vidal's work is particularly important not only for pioneering gay fiction, but for the gay rights movement in general. His work has impacted many, and will continue to do so after his passing. May he rest in peace.
