Former San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders offensive tackle Kwame Harris had an interview with CNN on the morning of Friday, March 29, 2013, and publicly went on record about being a homosexual during his NFL career.
This is not the first admittance of Harris' homosexuality though. He first went public with it back in January when he pleaded not guilty to charges of beating an ex-boyfriend. He told CNN on Friday morning that keeping his sexuality a secret in NFL locker rooms was never easy.
“You want to escape the despair and turmoil and your mind goes to dark places,” Harris said of keeping his sexuality secret. “I’m happy today, and I’m glad they were just ideas and I didn’t act on any of them.
“The cost was great not speak candidly open about myself in complete manner,” Harris said. “If I could have done it differently, I would have hoped I found the strength [to come out]."
Harris is a former first-round draft pick. He went on to say that he knew he was gay while playing in the NFL, but he needed to keep it a secret. He knew that keeping it a secret was a must and it was because he was afraid.
“I want people, whether gay athletes, athletes still in the closet, or youths who are not sure what their sexuality is to know those are common feelings,” Harris told CNN. “Don’t feel alone in having them.”
