Ellen DeGeneres’ night may have been highlighted by a shout out from Justin Timberlake as he received his award for favorite album, but the comedienne turned daytime talk show took home an award of her own. As CBS News reported on Jan. 8, DeGeneres took home the award for favorite daytime TV host at the 40th annual People’s Choice Awards.
The award marked the 14th total People’s Choice award she has received and the accomplishment is something she would’ve never dreamed of as a little girl:
As a young girl growing up in New Orleans, if anyone would have told me I was going to win 14 People’s Choice Awards, I---I mean 12, yes. Thirteen? Maybe. But 14?”
Of course DeGeneres threw in a little joke there, but that is what makes her such a warm daytime talk show host. It is also a reason she connects with her audience. Ellen has succeeded in making “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” for everyone. No matter the gender, age, race or sexuality, people really get drawn into her show, including someone who has come before her in the daytime TV talk show genre.
“As a matter of fact, just yesterday I was talking to this lovely African-American woman and she told me she was single and she works 80 hours a week to get by and she looked forward to coming home every night and watching me, and that woman’s name is Oprah Winfrey. I think I am doing something right.”
She sure is doing something right and of course Ellen DeGeneres was up to some of her comedic antics. As Timberlake went up to accept his award, DeGeneres started running up to the stage to steal the award, before Timberlake stopped her of course. But that is what makes Ellen simply Ellen.
