CNN anchor Anderson Cooper spent some money on Saturday night at Sean Penn’s Help Haiti Home gala. According to a report by PEOPLE magazine on Jan. 12, celebrities didn’t hold back during a live auction. Anderson’s $1.4 million bid and victory of a customized piece of art from artist Jeff Koons drew a strong reaction from his boyfriend Benjamin Maisani.

Although Maisani didn’t attend in person, he found out about the high-priced prize from Cooper via a text message after he won the bid. Cooper wasn’t the only won willing to dig deep in his pockets for the piece of art. Other celebrities went as high as $1.3 million before being outbid by Cooper who was egged on by actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

The win excited Anderson Cooper, who hosted the event, but Maisani was apparently shocked as Cooper jokingly told the audience:

“I texted my boyfriend and told him I spent $1.4 million on a piece of art. He said, ‘Are you f--- kidding me?”

All jokes aside, the event, attended by celebrities such as Michael Douglas, Emma Thompson, Bette Midler and Julia Roberts, raised a total of $6 million. Which makes the amount of money Anderson Cooper bid worth it.
