Matt Drudge is as obsessed with extreme weather as he is with politics, gun control, crooked cops and weird news stories. But it doesn't get much weirder than an article published by Gawker on Jan. 16.
Titled "Matt Drudge Misunderstands Basic Meteorological Phenomenon," the article shows a screen grab of one of Drudge's tweets, noting that there is "Cold rain in DC, tears from Founders above. 'America' has run its course. Bill of Rights evolving and dissolving."
The tweet includes a haunting picture of the Washington Monument, in silhouette and viewed through a rain-spattered, tinted, rear seat limo window. If nothing else, Matt Drudge has an eye for a good photo op.
But Gawker's Max Read was more interested in his prose.
Noting that the top news linker is "in Washington, D.C., today, for some reason, where he is observing the weather," Gawker seems to object to Drudge's metaphorical musings on society and a possible explanation for extreme weather.
"Fact check" continues Read. "Rain is water vapor that has condensed in the atmosphere and become heavy enough to fall, not the tears of ghosts."
There's never been any love lost between Gawker and Drudge, coming, as they do, from diametrically opposed viewpoints on just about everything. Maybe the magazine is trying to get in a good shot while Drudge (suddenly enamored of cowboy hats) is distracted in D.C.
Which brings up the most important, yet overlooked point in the whole affair.
