Gavrilova leads Dinos to CIS National semi-final win on Saturday

According to the University of Calgary Dinos website, the University of Calgary Dinos have advanced to the final game for the Canadian Interuniversity Sport National Women's Hockey Championship with a 5-4 overtime win over the University of Queen's Golden Gaels at the Varsity Arena in Toronto on Saturday.

A major reason for the Dinos success was the play of their Russian superstar. Iya Gavrilova of Krasnoyarsk, Russia scored twice including the game winner at 2:37 of the extra frame from Jenna Smith and Stephanie Ramsay.

Ramsay and Hayley Wickenheiser had multi-point games with a goal and an assist each.

The Dinos will now try to repeat their title from last season when they face the University of Montreal Carabins in a rematch of the 2012 championship game. The Carabins defeated the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds 5-3 in Saturday's other semi-final. Last season in Edmonton, the Dinos defeated the Carabins 5-1.

In other Dinos' athletics news, Rachel Machin of Calgary won the gold medal in the women's high jump at the CIS National Track and Field Championships in Edmonton. Machin jumped 1.82 metres to win the title. Dinos coach Doug Lamont was named the CIS women's track and field coach of the year as the University of Calgary also won the women's national track and field championship.
