Actress Demi Moore, who has lost a dramatic amount of weight since splitting from husband Ashton Kutcher in November 2011, checked into rehab for substance abuse, her rep confirmed Jan. 24, 2012.
[UPDATE: Demi leaves hospital after suffering drug-induced seizure]
Moore's rep told TMZ:
"Because of the stresses in her life right now, Demi has chosen to seek professional assistance to treat her exhaustion and improve her overall health. She looks forward to getting well and is grateful for the support of her family and friends."
Sources say Demi is seeking treatment for substance abuse after being rushed to a Los Angeles hospital at 11:21 p.m. PST on Jan. 23.
As a result, Moore, 49, has pulled out of a project to play feminist Gloria Steinem in a biopic about porn star Linda Lovelace.
Moore Has Gotten Rail-Thin Since Divorce
Moore, who married actor Ashton Kutcher in 2005, filed for divorce in November 2011 after Kutcher, 33, reportedly cheated on her with a bevy of 20-something bikini babes.
Sources say Demi's insecurities over the couple's 15-year age difference fueled the divorce. Moore, who has a toned, lean physique that women half her age would envy, has been open about her obsession with youth and beauty.
"I have had a love-hate relationship with my body," Demi said recently. "When I'm at the greatest odds with my body, it's usually because I feel my body's betraying me, whether that's been in the past, struggling with my weight and feeling that I couldn't eat what I wanted to eat, or that I couldn't get my body to do what I wanted it to do."
Body Obsession Only Brought Temporary Happiness
Demi, who's fitter and thinner now than ever, has confessed that during her 20s and 30s she was obsessed with being thin and looking good at any cost.
Over the years, tabloids have speculated that Moore has undergone over $500,000 in plastic surgery enhancements, from facelifts to breast surgeries to liposuction to a kneecap lift.
While Demi has repeatedly denied the rumors, she admits she was obsessed with her looks for many years.
"I had an extreme obsession with my body," she has said. "I made it a measure of my own value. I tried to dominate it, which I did, and I changed it multiple times over. But it never lasted and ultimately it didn't bring me anything but temporary happiness."
Moore, who once exercised up to two hours a day, has scaled back on her punishing workout regime and credits her youthful good looks to a clean diet, cleansing fasts and yoga and Pilates workouts.
Ironically, Moore is thinner and fitter now at almost 50 than she was in her 20s and 30s, when she worked out and dieted around the clock.
But Demi insists she started to look her best when she stopped obsessing over exercise. "Does being thin resolve anything? No," she concluded.
"The irony is that when I abandoned that desire to dominate my body, it actually became the body that I always wanted.
But it only happened when I stopped trying to control it. At the end of the day, this kind of obsession is pointless and meaningless."
