The Calgary Flames must be very pleased. A star is emerging in front of their eyes.
John Gaudreau, the Flames' fourth round draft pick in the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft continued his offensive prowess on Thursday when he scored twice and added an assist in a 5-1 rout over Canada in the semi-finals at the 2013 World Junior Hockey Championships in Ufa, Russia.
Gaudreau now has seven goals in the tournament, all in the last three games, to lead all players. According to Gord Miller of TSN, he was not expected to produce excellent offensive statistics.
Gaudreau's seven goals also leads the tournament and puts him in second place in tournament scoring with nine points, two points behind Canada's Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
The mere fact that Gaudreau went 104th overall in the draft last season, shows that many teams undervalued his skill set. The Flames however must be interested if he is able to continue similar offensive skills in the professional ranks.
The United States play Sweden in the 2013 World Junior Hockey Championship final Saturday at 6:00 a.m.
