When it comes to pregnant women, one certainly needs folic acid in one’s diet. Thank goodness! I’m not pregnant. Besides, how could I possibly take care of an infant when I’m always riding on Smelly’s back? Well, I guess I could take the infant with me. But, let’s be candid, shall we? I’m not ready for motherhood. Yet, if I were, I would certainly make sure that my multivitamin contains the right amount of folic acid.
A pregnant woman needs 400 micrograms a day of folic acid to reduce the risk of birth defects like spina bifida. Too much folic acid can mask a vitamin B-12 deficiency, so look for a multivitamin with no more than 400 mcg.
If the serving of breakfast cereal one typically eats has 400 mcg or more, consider taking one’s multivitamin every other day.
Folic acid is used for preventing and treating low blood levels of folic acid, as well as its complications, including anemia, and the inability of the bowel to absorb nutrients properly. Folic acid is also used for other conditions commonly associated with folic acid deficiency, including ulcerative colitis, liver disease, alcoholism, and kidney dialysis.
