Wizards of the Coast, Inc. will be holding prerelease tournaments this weekend for the newest expansion to Magic: The Gathering. Known as Gatecrash, the set will mark the 60th expansion, not including core sets and compilations, that the game has released since it first came out in 1993.
The event is scheduled to occur worldwide and can be found at most local gaming stores. To check and see where a store near you is holding the event, Wizards has made a store locator available through the Gatecrash website. All you need is to enter a zip code into the search bar provided and a list of local gaming stores hosting the event will display for you.
All the events will be a sealed format and each participant will be asked to choose one of the new five guilds upon their entry: Boros, Dimir, Gruul, Orzhov, or Simic. Once they have chosen where their loyalty resides, the player will receive a small box that should contain one guild pack, five Gatecrash booster packs, a guild sticker, a guild letter of introduction, and a 20-sided die with the guild colors and symbol on it.
If you have never played or have always wanted to try to play the game, prerelease events are a great introduction into the world of Magic: The Gathering. In most cases, this is the first time players, experienced or not, are interacting with the new cards. Thus, making for an even playing field. If you're still intimidated by the look of things, those who have played before are always willing to take time to explain how the mechanics of the game work even while playing. For those living in or near the South Shore area, then you may want to check out Battleground Games & Hobbies in Abington, Mass. They will be hosting prerelease events all weekend long. Their full schedule of events can be found here on their forums.
