Gascon's Malbec Reserve is a delightful red

Let’s start with the disclaimer. I like Malbecs. And if they are Argentinian, all the better.

Don Miguel Gascon (Gascon Vineyards) of Argentina produces one of my favorites. Gascon was established in 1884, so the roots of wine making extend back for over 100 years. From Mendoza, famous as one of the top producing areas in the world, Gascon Malbecs are famous for their consistency and quality.

Malbec is, like many other varietals, climate dependent. In the case of Malbec’s from Mendoza, the high elevations, combined with the pure waters from the Andes, leads to a more robust Malbec when compared to others around the world.

The Don Miguel Gascon 2011 Malbec Reserve is a true delight. It complex, yet understanding to casual wine drinkers. If you enjoy blackberry on the palate, with tannins on the finish, you will be sure to like this wine.

The grapes in the Reserve were hand-harvested early in the day, increasing the intensity of the flavors. After harvest, the grapes were crushed and cold soaked for 72 hours or more. Additionally, the juice was kept in contact with the skin through the end of fermentation (about three weeks). Fermentation was for three weeks in upright tanks at a maintained temperature of 85 degrees. After initial fermentation, malolactic fermentation occurred and subsequently the wine was aged in French and American oak.

The Reserve is primarily Malbec (97%) and Petit Verdot (3%). The alcohol content is a pleasant 14.8%.
If you are into Malbecs, and want a delightful and refreshing one for accompanying your meal, Gascon is worth seeking out.

Have a winederful day!
