Fast reaction to a suspected gas leak Saturday afternoon resulted in several dozen residents of the Bacon Retirement Community being evacuated for several hours while the source of the gas leak was tracked down.
Located in Richmond, Virginia at 815 N. 35th Street and owned by Bacon Housing, L. P. The project has been in service since 1999 and now has a total of 58 low-income units, which is slightly more than other low-income housing projects in the metro-Richmond area.
Of the 58 low-income units available. there are 57 one-bedroom apartments and one two-bedroom apartment. Richmond Fire Department responded around three Saturday afternoon and immediately turned off the main gas lines.
Tenants were allowed to return to their apartments after about three hours while the fire department and the Richmond Department of Public Utilities searched for the source of the problem. There will be further updates to this story as more information becomes available.
