PC gets new car combat title for fall season, complete with exclusive features and launch trailer.
Gas Guzzlers Extreme is officially available on Steam, Iceberg Interactive announced today. Packing 40 tracks, 8 combat arenas and 350 miles of road, GGE looks to make an impact within the niche genre.
Developed by independent studio, Gamepires, GGE comes at a time when car combat titles seem to be struggling to find a viable audience. That said, Gas Guzzlers Extreme certainly looks the part with high velocity racing and balls to the walls shooting mechanics. The action racer even comes with Steam achievements, trading cards, cloud saving and Big Picture support. Additionally, there’s exclusive three wheel racing vehicles.
The aforementioned items sound like the usual bells and whistles within a car combat title, but where GGE attempts to break the mold lies within faction play. Players can create clans and then battle, tournament-style, against one another. The last vehicular combat title to implement a guild feature was Auto Assault back in 2006. While the game received favorable reviews, the game itself never picked up steam; as a result, its servers were shut down, and subscriptions reconciled, by 2007. Thankfully, GGE has no monthly fees and isn’t limited to 3 factions; players have free will as far as clan creation go.
It’s hard to remain unskeptical on Gas Guzzlers Extreme though, considering the track record of the genre. Twisted Metal obviously being one of the very few exceptions and Mario Kart is in a class of its own. There’s no denying the love towards the nucleus of car combat, but clearly something’s missing with repeated failures, critically and commercially. Many titles in the fold have scores hovering around the 50s and 60s, V8 Arcade, Blood Drive and Full Auto 2: Battlelines come to mind, but let’s digress.
Gas Guzzlers Extreme has a fresh launch on its hand with open faction play that may not reinvent the genre, but certainly adds depth to the core elements. Time will tell if the game’s other offerings have enough fuel for the race.
Presently, Steam is having a 20% discount promotion on Gas Guzzlers Extreme, normally $24.99, the shooting racer will be $19.99 until Oct. 15.
