Gary Shirley recently reported moving in with his brother because school was starting. Now, Wetpaint reports on Jan. 28 that part of the reason that Gary is moving is because he was being evicted from his home for not paying rent.
Gary says that it's true that he hasn't paid his rent since 12-12-12, but he's been busy and when he showed up at the landlord's house to pay his rent they refused to accept it and are moving forward with their lawsuit. Gary claims that a new tenant is already assigned to the rental, and he had nothing but problems with them since he moved in.
According to landlord/tenant laws, it doesn't matter if a new tenant is assigned to the rental, Gary is still liable for the rent until his lease is over. He will be required to pay the $1,360 that was past due because he already readily admitted that he owed it.
Having problems with your landlord isn't a reason to avoid paying rent, neither is being busy. If you want to keep a roof over your head they you pay rent, it's as simple as that. Now that he has an eviction on his record, it will be nearly impossible to rent another place until he settles his debt, or seven years until the debt falls off his credit report.
What do you think of Gary's eviction?
