Prize fighting returns to the Central Valley as 2012 Olympian and Avenal native Jose Ramirez Headlines ‘The Fight For Water II’. The event is scheduled for May 17, 2014 at the Selland Arena in Fresno, California. The undercard will feature local talent including The California Bear Gary Salazar.
For Salazar this is a prime opportunity to display his skills and show his support for advocates that are working hard to ensure that Central Valley residents and farmers have access to much needed water.
Salazar is a young prospect who is currently 3-0 as a professional and believes that a win on May 17 in front of a home town crowd will place him on a fast track to bigger fights. “Signing with Top Rank is exciting,” said Salazar at a media work out in his hometown of Fresno. “I am satisfied with my progress and believe we can approach a world title really fast, but for now we will take it day by day.”
While working on perfecting his craft theTop Rank fighter is also focused on bringing about awareness to an issue that affects every resident in the Central Valley and that is water, or lack there of.
According to the Latino Water Coalition, a sponsor of the May 17 event, water must be made available to valley farmers. If not the result will be more land laid idle, more individuals out of work and more businesses destroyed.
It is admirable for a young professional like Salazar to use the ring he competes in as a platform for a cause that is greater than self. “We need water in the central valley and I am willing to sacrifice and do what I can to let the people know what we are really fighting for.”
