Gary Oldman cast in 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes'

Deadline Hollywood reported on Feb. 28 that Gary Oldman has been cast in the upcoming film “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” Oldman will play Dreyfus, the human resistance leader in this sequel to the surprisingly good “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” The movie will be released by 20th Century Fox on May 14, 2014.

Gary Oldman is most familiar to fans as Commissioner Gordon in Christopher Nolan's “Dark Knight” trilogy. He also portrayed Sirius Black in the “Harry Potter” series.

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" will take place after the apes have already taken over the planet and Andy Serkis will return as Caesar to take on the humans. Jason Clarke from “Zero Dark Thirty” is also signed on in a yet to be revealed role. James Franco starred in the original film, but is not expected to appear in this one.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes” was released in 2011 and opened to generally good reviews. The movie served as a prequel to the Charlton Heston franchise that began in 1968 with “Planet of the Apes.”
