Gary Johnson resumes role as chair of issues advocacy organization (Video)

Former New Mexico Governor and 2012 presidential candidate Gary Johnson announced this morning he is resuming his position as Honorary Chairman of the Our America Initiative, an issues advocacy organization dedicated to promoting the principles of limited government, individual liberty and non-intervention abroad.

As the Libertarian Party nominee for president in 2012, Johnson garnered more votes than any Libertarian candidate in history. In his two terms as a Republican governor of heavily Democratic New Mexico, Johnson gained national recognition for balancing the state’s budget without raising taxes, reducing the state’s workforce, and creating an environment for job creation that ranked among the nation’s best.

Johnson served as Honorary Chairman of the Our America Initiative from 2009 until announcing his candidacy for president in 2011. As Our America’s spokesman, Johnson traveled to more than 30 states and made hundreds of public and media appearances. Resuming his post, Johnson plans to continue his advocacy of dramatic government spending reductions, tax reform, and greater protections for civil and personal liberties from encroachment by the federal government. He will also continue to challenge U.S. intervention in foreign conflicts, as well as the size and cost of the military.

Announcing his return to the Our America Initiative, Johnson said, “With the nation’s debt well over $16 Trillion -- and growing every minute of every day, we cannot afford to let the nation’s leaders keep dancing around reality with temporary ‘cliff avoidance’ and chronic debt ceiling increases. Nor can we sit by and let the federal government continue to erode our privacy and individual liberty. Laws like the Patriot Act and the NDAA must be challenged and pressure mounted to protect Americans from a government that is involving itself in our private lives more and more every day.

“As the Honorary Chairman of the Our America Initiative, I intend to raise and discuss these and other critical issues, and keep challenging the status quo that has brought America to a true crisis point. Millions of Americans see the dysfunction in Washington, and I hope to do my part to give their concerns and their hopes a voice in the national dialogue.”

Among the activities planned for Johnson and the Our America Initiative is a nation-wide tour of college campuses that will feature speeches, Q & A with students, and appearances by other nationally-known guests.
