Gary and Susan Kolb fight for the life of their South African Boerboels (Photos)

This morning one of my readers brought the story of Gary and Susan Kolb from New Jersey and their two South African Boerboels, one of which has passed way from cancer and the other, as far as I can tell, is being kept by animal control. The Kolb’s and the dogs are in hot water after the pair of dogs had two incidents of biting people, one in 2008 and again in 2009. If you have never seen a dog of these breed before, let me tell you, they are huge and in the wrong hands/incapable owners, these dogs could certainly be bad news.

The couple was able to keep the dogs from being put down by agreeing to a muzzle order, which, given their history, I believe is a good idea. However, it was reported that the dogs had been out nuzzled and now the Kolb’s are facing charges and one of the dogs has passed away while the other is in a sort of doggy jail. In this case, the judge seemed to be in agreement to let the remaining dog keep its life if they found a proper facility to house it. They did find one but Animal Control did not feel that it was adequate.

It seems that the Kolb’s are at the understanding that although they love their dogs, and they may be good with them, that they could be too much for them to handle given their past history and that the remaining dog is better off living some place else. To come to that understanding is a huge ordeal and I can only imagine how that feels. Now they are in a fight to keep the dog from being put down and are fighting this in superior court.

At this time I have seen very little on this case and am unsure of any petitions or Facebook pages dedicated to the dogs. As an animal lover I admire the Kolb’s for fighting for the life of their beloved South African Boerboels and that they have accepted that they can not have ownership any longer. The fight that they are putting up to keep the remaining dog alive, in my eyes, makes them hero’s to the dog and the breed. If you know of petitions or Facebook pages for them please let me know. This is on the other side of the country and I will try to keep you all up to date on this.
