Gary and Mallory say area was too remote to switch cabs, ‘Amazing Race'

“The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business”team Gary and Mallory Ervin said it was too remote of an area to switch cab drivers during the last leg, an issue that pushed them to the back of the pack and definitely contributed to their loss of the $1 million grand prize.

“Once we left the airport, there were no cabs around to the marina, and it was a remote location (Jules’ Undersea Lodge) … we would’ve had to have had him bring us somewhere to switch cab drivers … we were kind of stuck to the date we had to the prom at that point,” Gary said in an interview Monday, one day after the season finale aired.

Gary explained that the team originally found a cab with a GPS and a driver who knew the area, but the cab belonged to another traveler. Viewers saw Mallory beg and plea with the woman to switch, trying to explain to her the importance of getting that cab, but the woman wasn’t interested in switching.

‘The X Factor’ rounds out team with announcement of two show hosts

The father-daughter team was first featured on season 17, when they were eliminated after getting lost in Oman.

More from my interview with Gary and Mallory Ervin:

Was it difficult to watch the finale last night?

Mallory: “After Zev and Justin got eliminated, ya know, I was emotional the whole entire time of the show; so, yeah, it was kind of hard to watch. I still have yet to really remember – to really see – what happened at the end of it because I couldn’t really see, it got louder and louder, but it was fun. It was definitely a good experience.” (Mallory is referring to the private viewing party she, her father, the other three finale teams and their friends and families had during the airing of the episode.)

Other than the locations, what was different about this race compared to your first race?

Mallory: “I think we were more competitive this time around. I think the first time we were so happy to be there – and the second time, too, just so happy to be there – but we felt like because we were offered this wonderful experience and opportunity twice we really had to step up our game the second time, whereas the first time we had nothing to lose, just happy to be there the whole time.”

Gary: “We knew the other teams … we felt we may have had a little more of an advantage because we’d seen all their seasons, and the only got to see a part of ours.” (Gary and Mallory added that they loved meeting the teams they had watched on television, saying they were a little awestruck.)

If asked, would you run the race again?

Mallory: “Oh, Lord, yes. We’re sitting here waiting for it to happen.”

Gary: “After two times in a row, I’ve gotta make sure I’ve still gotta job.”
