Today June 23, 2014 Wizards of the Coast announced in an article by Blake Rasmussen on Magic.Wizards.com that inside every prerelease booster box of Magic 2015 you'll find a special oversized Magic: The Gathering planeswalker card: Garruk the Slayer.

Garruk the Slayer
Planeswalker - Garruk (Uncommon)
0: Put a 2/2 green Wolf creature token onto the battlfield.
+4 Loyalty: Target Wolf creature gets +1/+0 and gains deathtouch until end of turn.
-10 Loyalty: Destroy target creature. Put loyalty counters on Garruk the Slayer equal to that creature's touchness.
-25 Loyalty: Destroy all creatures Garruk the Slayer doesn't control.
Starting loyalty of 20

After reading Garruk the Slayer the first thing one may notice is that it doesn't have a casting cost. That's because it's a special planewalker card meant for multiplayer play.

Here's how it works. One player plays his or her Prerelease Magic deck as normal. This player always goes first. Pretty straightforward. The other player, however, plays as Garruk! Garruk starts at 20 loyalty, and can activate one loyalty ability each turn.

There's a couple of special rules though. Unlike normal planeswalker cards, Garruk the Slayer cannot "be returned to its owner's hand or otherwise removed."

Ability wise, Garruk the Slayer reminds us much more of Garruk Relentless than the recent Garruk, Caller of Beasts. He can slowly churn out an army of 2/2 Wolf creature tokens and gain loyalty through making them slightly larger and more intimidating in combat via +1/+0 deathtouch. It's interesting to note how the bigger a creature Garruk the Slayer destroys, the less loyalty he'll lose, though he'll have to have 10 loyalty in order for you to activate the ability. You'll find yourself at a real disadvantage if you're using his ability to take out small threats. Protecting Garruk the Slayer for just a few turns though will allow you to devastate the battlefield.

Abusing Garruk the Slayer is best done in a deck which features other Wolf creatures in it. As of the moment though, there's only three Wolf creatures currently running around in Standard. It's unclear if Witchstalker or Briarpack Alpha will be reprinted, leaving just Nyxborn Wolf. You'll have to turn to older formats such as Modern or Commander to really make an interesting battledeck for your friends team up and fight against.

Every game store running Magic 2015 prerelease events will also receive a special eight-foot tall Garruk standee. After you've finished your game, take a picture with Garruk and upload it HuntBiggerGame.com after June 30, 2014 to enter and win his axe. Pretty sweet, no? You can also share your pictures with Garruk on your favorite social media accounts with the hastag #magic2015 and #huntbiggergame.
