Garnet, the powerful gem of January

The gemstone for January, often called a birth stone, is the garnet. This gem is an isometric crystal that contains minerals. The gem can come in multiple colors such as a reddish-purple color known as almandine, a vivid green color known as tsavorite and many other shades in between. The most common and most well know is a deep red color. Of course, this stone is more than just a birth stone and it has many qualities that make it interesting to a practitioner of magic, so much so that you can often find small raw garnets for sale in Pagan shops.

Magically speaking the garnet is highly valuable as it works with both projective and receptive energies. As its common red color hints, the gem corresponds with fire and the heart chakra. This wonderful gem doesn’t just stop there though. It has many other properties as well and is highly useful, which makes it a common find in a magic practicing Pagan’s belongings.

The garnet is know to assist in the matters of love, strength and imagination. It is also know to help with vitality, energy and the flow of your blood through your body. This is a good gem to give to a couple who are trying to conceive or to a man who is having issues in the bed room. Garnets will also help support long term relationships that are romantic, family or friendship.

Garnets are the ideal gem for protection and are often used in charms for travel due to their protective qualities. The stone on its own is great for warding off potential thief’s. You can place a small garnet in your luggage, purse, pocket or other such location or find a small bead that has been made from a garnet and put it on a small string that you can add to any item. Elizabeth Barrette has written a great saying to go along with the garnet charm, it reads "Garnet wink and garnet blink. Make the thief’s ambition shrink. Garnet glow and garnet show. How my health will overflow."
