Kemp, Texas- A Kaufman County K-9 named Nurmo led deputies to a burglary suspect at the Hillcrest Baptist Church near Kemp on January 2, 2012. Arrested was Louis Lee Underwood, 25, of Garland.
The burglary call was received just before 11 a.m. and when deputies responded they were told by witnesses that someone had “broken into the building and had left a vehicle parked in the church parking lot.” The deputies utilized K-9 Nurmo by letting him clear the church building so the officer’s could safely enter the location. The suspect was not inside, so K-9 Nurmo followed the burglars scent outside and located the suspect on a gravel road behind the church.
Suspect Underwood wisely gave up to the deputies to avoid the bite of Nurmo. He was taken into custody and according to KCSO Spokeswoman Pat Laney, Underwood was charged with “burglary of a building, fraudulent use/ possession of identifying information, a warrant out of McKinney PD and a warrant from Dallas PD as well as three warrants out of Dallas County.
Underwood was transported to the Kaufman Law Enforcement Center without incident, where he remains without bond.
