What is it about Saint Patrick's Day that puts Irish in my gig? Why the thoughts of luck and leprechauns, as well as good lively music, potatoes and shamrocks. These, all ignite tales of legend and folklore. As a teacher, I enjoy this time of the year. I like to tease my students with tales of wild leprechauns running about and making mischief. So where do I go when I want to share a bit of the green? Garin Park, In Hayward, California! There are sure to be a few leprechauns hiding out in these warm luscious hills. The cows are roaming free range and so are the mountain lions. The hikes at this location are moderate and easily done by the least experienced hiker. Children adore running about the ups and downs of the gently graded trails. It is a good warm up and can be pushed to more invigorating levels of endurance and longevity. I enjoy seeing the variety of outdoors people here along with lots of dogs on leashes. There is a kite area well aired and the scent of glorious barbeque. Bike riders, runners, and couples gathered with families. Last weekend, I saw whole families walking up a very steep grade like it was flatland. Some members of this family went down to get younger members and then went back up as if it were nothing! I was huffing and puffing like a dragon when I walked up. Add to this, the laughter of people and you have one well-experienced day. I recommend Garin Park for a Wonderful Saint Patrick’s Day outing! I often see rainbows over the hill here. So, please share the gold with me if you do catch a leprechaun here! Have a safe and sane Saint Patrick's Day at Garin Park.
