Each week during the high school sports season the Eastern Maine High School Sports Examiner and the Eastern Maine Sports Blog will announce a female and male athlete of the week. You can send your nominations to Marc @ easternmainesportsblog@yahoo.com. When you send your nominations include the athlete, name of the school, stats for the week of the nomination.
2012/2013 Winter season- Week 8- January 21st-January 26th
Male
Garet Beal- Jonesport-Beals- Basketball- Recorded 39 points and 13 rebounds in 73-58 victory over Greenville. Scored 55 points in 100-47 victory over Woodland. The 55 points broke a school record previously set by his father. Beal also had 10 rebounds, eight assists and six steals in 2 and a half quarters of action against Woodland. It is the third athlete of the week honor this winter sports season for Beal.
Runner up
Colton Bivighouse- Katahdin- Basketball- Scored 29 points (including his 1000 career point) and grabbed 15 rebounds in 61-51 loss to Southern Aroostook. Scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in 62-51 victory over PVHS. Scored 30 points and grabbed 21 rebounds in 62-42 victory over Greater Houlton Christian.
Other nominations
Mitch Worcester- Washburn- Basketball- Scored 39 points including his 2000 career point in 69-61 victory over Fort Fairfield.
Alex Campbell- Bangor- Basketball- Scored 23 points including converting a four point play at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime in 62-58 victory over Messalonskee.
Isaiah Bess- Penquis- Basketball- Scored 29 points and had 10 rebounds in 53-42 victory over Lee. Scored 37 points in 64-42 victory over Central.
Sam Thomas- PCHS- Wrestling- The junior picked up two wins including his 100th of his high school career.
Riley Whitney- Stearns- Basketball- Scored 16 points in 57-36 win over PVHS. Scored 15 points in 61-34 victory over Mattanawcook. Scored 20 points in 57-47 victory over PVHS.
Ryan Rebar- Foxcroft- Basketball- Recorded 17 points, five steals, two assists and two rebounds in 57-39 victory over Dexter.
Hunter Smith- Foxcroft- Basketball- Recorded 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in 57-39 victory over Dexter.
Kaleb Smith- Foxcroft- Basketball Scored 13 points (3-3 from three point range) in 57-39 victory over Dexter.
