Newell's Old Boys are looking to right the way after the departure of Gerardo Martino last summer. With Sergio Berti, things were going well until they hit the skids and underwent a 12-match winless streak and saw their title hope slip away. When Berti resigned after the loss to Atletico Nacional in Copa Libertadores, the Rosario squad lost their way and they find themselves in 12th place at this stage of the torneo final.

This is why they decided to look at a coach that is very similar in style. Former Vélez coach Ricardo Gareca confirmed on Friday that he already met with Newell's and he would be interested in coaching them.

"Of course, Newell's interests me. It's flattering that they are considering me said Gareca in an interview 680 AM in the city of Rosario.

Newell's president, Guillermo Lorente, also confirmed that things went very well in their meeting and that he would be pleased with continuing to speak with Gareca and fill the position that he currently taken on a caretaker basis by Ricardo Lunari.

Things will continue in the coming weeks as Gareca finds himself in Europe on vacation.

Gareca was one of the most successful coaches in the history of Vélez Sarsfield and was being considered by both the Paraguayan and Peruvian national teams after he stepped down in Liniers back in December. He led Vélez to three league titles and an annual crown as well as appearing in two Copa Libertadores semifinals during his tenure.
