GARDINER--- The Gardiner Tigers football team enter the season with a positive outlook on the upcoming 2014 campaign.
The Tigers finished 0-8 last season. They combined for 11 wins in 2011 and 2012, reaching the class B East semifinals each of those seasons.
"There is a positive energy around this team that will need to be carried on throughout the year if we want to win,"Gardiner coach Matthew Burgess said. "I expect the energy to stay positive and I expect we will win."
The Tigers have strong senior leadership plus two sophomores that will be competing for starting positions.
"Strong senior leadership should make a huge difference for us this year. The offensive line and running back positions are experienced,"Burgess said. "The team had a good summer in the weight room and we found some young players at the in the 7v7 league who will compete for starting positions (QB Eli Kropp So.) on offense and defense (Hunter Russell So.). We will have to see how these young players perform in live action."
With another year of experience, the Tigers defense should be improved.
"The defense should be much improved with experience and more size this fall,"Burgess said. "(Class) B-East is still one of the most competitive conferences in the state. We will need to raise our level of play to meet the level of competition."
Gardiner will open the season with a home game against Lawrence. Check out the full schedule.
