Gardening 101: Green Beans (Video)

Beans are one of the easiest crops to get started and are especially great for beginner gardeners. Since there are such a wide variety of garden beans, this segment will focus on the most mainstream type: green beans.

Green beans are not only easy to grow and harvest, but they are delicious. They also come in two types: bush beans, meaning the plants grow no more than two feet in height, and pole beans, meaning the plants grow above two feet and need the assistance of a trellis or something else for the vines to climb.

Late spring is around the time bean seeds should be planted, since they prefer warm weather. They can be planted directly into the ground and about three to four seeds should be planted one inch beneath the soil. Make sure your plants have a space of around four inches between them, and if you are additionally planting them in rows, allow about three feet between each row.

Ensure that your plants are well watered and stay in full sunlight. The seeds should start sprouting between six and ten days. You can begin harvesting your beans when the pods are of the size you choose. But make sure to harvest them before the seeds develop inside the pods.
