Garden City Middle School students Julia Gavalas (left) and Emma Phillipas, pictured here with art teacher Lori Biondi, were chosen to showcase their artwork at the 22nd Annual Legislative Student Art Exhibition hosted by NYSATA (New York State Art Teacher’s Association).
The exhibition will take place at the State Legislative Building in Albany, from March 12–16, 2012. The students’ “illuminations” were based on the medieval art found in the Book of Kells and utilized gold ink for accents. Julia’s work, “The Rose of Kells,” was created with colored pencils, ink, and watercolor. Emma’s “Celtic Gold” used similar media.
“Emma and Julia’s art works represent the success of the middle school’s flourishing fine arts curriculum,” commented teacher Lori Biondi. “I am very proud of Emma and Julia. It is an honor to have their work exhibited in Albany for the 2012 NYSATA Art Exhibition.” District Coordinator of Music and the Arts, Dr. Nina Prasso explained, “Thank you, Ms. Biondi, for once again planning such wonderful art experiences for your students. This lesson truly allows the students to gain an understanding of the cultural dimensions and contributions of medieval art and the art of illumination. By addressing a New York State Standard of the Arts, your students had the opportunity to ‘develop an understanding of the personal and cultural forces that shape artistic communication and how the arts in turn shape the diverse cultures of past and present society’.
Congratulations to you and your students for this wonderful accomplishment!”
