Archbishop Georg Ganswein, the Prefect of the Papal Household who also acts as a private secretary to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, has said that a widely circulated story which this writer also commented on on the Diocese of Knoxville’s official blog Life At 25, in which the Pontiff Emeritus is reported to have said that he had a “mystical experience” in which he felt that the Holy Spirit was leading him to go is not true. “It was invented from the alpha to the omega,”Archbishop Georg Gänswein said Aug. 25 to an Italian television channel. The text was released in a report yesterday by Catholic News Agency.
“There is nothing true in this article,” the Archbishop said. The story was originally floated by Zenit, which is a Rome-based Catholic news service. Archbishop Ganswein gave the interview while he and the Pontiff Emeritus were at Castel Gandolfo to attend a concert and visit the Papal Gardens. “The Pope Emeritus is very well and he was here to visit the palace because there was a small concert and to take a beautiful walk in the gardens and have dinner there.”
