‘Gangster Squad,’ ‘Haunted House’ open in Huntsville theaters Jan. 11

A violent period crime drama and a raunchy paranormal comedy will greet moviegoers on the second weekend of 2013.

Gangster Squad’ and ‘A Haunted House’ open nationwide on Friday, Jan. 11.

Inspired by a true story, ‘Gangster Squad’ chronicles a unit of Los Angeles police officers that operate outside the law in their battle to defeat the mafia in the 1940s and 1950s.

The film, directed by Ruben Fleischer (‘Zombieland’), features a talented cast, including Sean Penn as real-life gangster Mickey Cohen.

Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Nick Nolte and Emma Stone also star.

Rated R for violence and language. Runtime: 1 hour, 53 minutes.

‘A Haunted House’ is a comedy spoofing horror films from the outrageous imagination of Marlon Wayans, who co-wrote the parodies ‘Scary Movie’ and ‘Scary Movie 2.’

While ‘Haunted House’ promises more straight-up comedy and less outright parody than ‘Scary Movie,’ the film still draws heavily from the popular ‘Paranormal Activity’ franchise and other found-footage horror movies for its source material.

Wayans and Cedric the Entertainer are among the comedic cast.
