Gaming marathon almost kills hardcore gamer

One gamer found out how grueling a gaming session can be after constantly playing video games left him hospitalized with a condition that could have been deadly, according to a Feb. 26, 2013 Kotaku report.

The website writes that according to The Straits Times, Xu Yi, 36, who lives in Fuzhou, China, spent the Chinese New Year playing video games throughout the night and sleeping all day. His family told the publication that once he woke up, he would head out to party with friends and then return to gaming.

Yi began to feel dizzy and was experiencing headaches.

According to Kotaku, the gamer was diagnosed as having a minor stroke and was subsequently hospitalized. After taking images of his brain, doctors determined Yi had developed a number of cerebral hemorrhages, which could have been devastating.

Fortunately, the problem was caught early enough that doctors say he can return to playing video games in about 30 days.

Kotaku notes that in the past, gamers in China have actually died “on their quest to game” and recommends everyone “take rests between long sessions so you don’t overexert yourself.”
