Gaming is for the Girls in 2014

The ESA, Entertainment Software Association, has put out its new 2014 study on the Essential Facts about the computer and video game industry for 2014. The document covers sales, demographics and usage data.

Last year their report mentioned that the split between Girl Gamers versus Guy Gamers was evenly split, and this year the ladies surpassed the men in the number of hours spent playing games.

  • 59% of Americans play video games
  • 51% of US Households own a dedicated game console, and those that do own an average of 2
  • The average gamer is 31 years old
  • 29% under 18
  • 32% 18-35
  • 39% over 36
  • While 52% of gamers are male / 48% female, Women age 18 or older represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (36%) than boys age 18 or younger (17%)
  • Average number of years gamers have been playing is 14

  • Average age of purchaser is 35
  • Purchases are split evenly between male and female at 50%
  • 44% of gamers state that gaming gives them the most value for their money compared to DVDs, Music or going out to Movies
