During E3 2013, Microsoft announced their “Games with Gold” program, which allows active Xbox Live Gold subscribers to download two pre-selected games for free and keep them even after your gold subscription has expired. The program, which began in June and has offered such titles as Fable 3 and Assassin’s Creed 2, as well as a handful of downloadable titles, was initially only supposed to run through the end of the year. However, Microsoft’s own ‘Major Nelson’ and the Xbox Wire staff have confirmed that the program will remain an ongoing benefit for Live subscribers on the Xbox 360. The program will continue to operate the way it currently does with each title receiving roughly a half month window for subscribers to download the title.
Once the title is downloaded it is yours to keep forever even in the event you choose not to continue your Live subscription. While most of the titles chosen have been older games, they are also hugely successful titles like the previously mentioned titles as well as Dead Rising 2, Crackdown and currently the blockbuster Halo 3 is available to download through October 31, 2013. This is a nice show of appreciation on behalf of Microsoft and makes having a Live subscription significantly more valuable. Make sure you download each game during their window of being offered because if you miss it, there’s no way for you to go back and download it free of charge. Keep your eyes open for upcoming offerings as they usually don’t announce them too far ahead of time and when you turn on your Xbox you can usually find an advertisement on your dashboard indicating which title is available.
