In July 2013, the U.S. government officially recognized game players as professional athletes. Foreign gamers can obtain the O-1 Visa to remain in the country, but they must show extraordinary skill and ability in their field to qualify.
The League of Legends Championship Series is recognized as a sport in the exact way professional hockey and basketball is. The event is so large and popular that it’s held in three locations, including the massive Staples Center in Los Angeles. League of Legends has become the most played game in the world with nearly 32 million players per month.
Professional gaming is growing rapidly in North America and Europe. Sundance DiGiovanni and Mike Sepso co-founded Major League Gaming in 2002. Their tournaments grew quickly just through word-of-mouth. Eventually, broadcasters aired professional gaming tournaments as a sport.
