I'll admit, I've spent a lot of time using up online gaming site's free trials. And no, I've almost rarely ever bought a game after these trials. Mostly becuase I've been too frustrated when I finally start getting into how to do things properly when my screen blinks a million times before returning me to my normal windows mode and announcing my time is up.
But this time I may have found a new favorite game. Well at least for this week anyway.
Echoes of the Past: Royal House of Stone starts out like most of the million mystery games that require you to squint your eyes and stare intensely at the screen searching for hidden objects. But here's where EotP differs from most of those games: there's actual mystery involved.
Soon into my trial I was left on my own in the game to figure out where to go and what to look for next. The rooms with hidden objects were few and far between actual mystery rooms and corridors with very little or no hints on what you're supposed to do.
But when you find out what it is and a puzzle is solved, let me tell you, it was borderline on that sigh of accomplishment that Professor Layton brings out in me.
I'd recommend playing for the free hour just to see how different this mystery game is, though it took me a good deal longer than I would have liked to get into how to go about the rooms. But it was well worth it. and well worth keeping long after the trial hour has expired.
See for yourself, Echoes of the Past: Royal House of Stone is not just another PC hidden objects game. Though those parts are still there for dignity's sake. And to give those Diner/Cafe/Hotel/Farm/insert random business here Dash games a run for their money.
