Galveston police officer files whistleblower suit against city

GALVESTON - A former Galveston Police Lieutenant has filed a lawsuit claiming he was stripped of his command for blowing the whistle on the police chief's illegal activities.
Michael Gray, who was later reduced to the rank of Sergeant, claims he witnessed Galveston Police Chief Charles Wiley engage in criminal activity between September and October of last year.

In a suit filed in Galveston County District Court against the city of Galveston, Gray says Wiley transferred him from command of the Internal Affairs Division to the Investigative Services Bureau after he reported the illegal activity.

The suit adds, that as the top officer, charged with investigating illegal or unlawful acts by police officers, Gray gathered sworn witness statements regarding Wiley's misconduct.

The investigation was conducted in good faith and the information regarding the illegal activity of Charles Wiley was reported to the appropriate law enforcement agency, the Galveston County District Attorney, according to the lawsuit.
