Gallery Underground launch party Saturday, March 16 (Photos)

Intriguing is the first word that comes to mind as Gallery Underground appears in Crystal City formerly known as Northern Virginia Art Center. Having just been opened as a gallery a year ago, now it appears with a new name.

There is a lot more behind it than a simple name change. Vornado, the lead commercial developer for Crystal City urban renewal has a more visible role.

Here is the bottom line. Artists attract a sophisticated audience of considerable size. Artists need more support in marketing and advertising to attract a larger audience for their work.

Arlington artists represent a community of very talented artists whose credentials are as good or better than most places in the nation. The question is, how many people living in the Arlington and greater DC Metro community are art consumers, collectors and investors?

It takes a large and cultured community to sustain the artists who in turn contribute significantly to the quality of life. My reporting interest is focused on individual artists.

Works in this exhibit runs the gamut from painters Dennis Crayon's and George Bowles' photo realistic work, to the abstracts of Bud Hensgen and Linda Maldonado. Artists may work in a tradition of "realism", or they may create works entirely from their imagination. Some artists work with "real" materials… such as potters using leaves impressed into their damp clay. Even for artists who work in a realistic mode, imagination is key. Each individual work of art is processed through the imagination of the artist, whose stamp is forever on it.
