Galaxy S5 display called 'the best performing smartphone display ever'

DisplayMate Technologies, which does comparative reviews of the displays of new products, released its look (no pun intended) at the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5's display on Monday, and this quote from the review puts it all in perspective (again, no pun intended):

Based on our extensive Lab tests and measurements, which we present in detail below, the Galaxy S5 is the Best performing Smartphone display that we have ever tested – and it has raised the bar for top display performance up by another notch.

Dr. Raymond Soneira, President of DisplayMate Technologies, gave the "marketing puffery" term to Apple's Retina display, which the company claimed had a PPI (326 pixels per inch) value so high that an end user couldn't discern the individual pixels.

Since that time, a number of devices have surpassed that value, including Samsung's Galaxy S5, which has a PPI of 432.

Considering that above statement, Samsung took the GS5's display to the next level by reducing the emphasis on pixel density and focusing (this time, pun intended) on improving the Galaxy S5 display’s "Maximum Brightness, Screen Reflectance, performance in High Ambient Light, Absolute Color Accuracy, Viewing Angles, display power efficiency, and running time on battery."

DisplayMate noted that considering the GS5's iterative update to the older GS4,

Many people are assuming that the Galaxy S5's While many people have assumed that the Galaxy S5 has basically the same display as the Galaxy S4, but just a bit bigger, that isn’t the case ... Our detailed Lab tests show that there have been significant display performance improvements in almost every single test and measurement category, resulting in a number of new records for Smartphone display performance. Based on our extensive Lab tests and measurements, which we present in detail below, the Galaxy S5 is the Best performing Smartphone display that we have ever tested -- and it has raised the bar for top display performance up by another notch.

The accolades come not from subjective testing, but actual numbers. According to the DisplayMate Technologies,

Based on our extensive Lab tests and measurements, the Galaxy S5 is the Best performing Smartphone display that we have ever tested. It has a long list of new records for best Smartphone display performance including: Highest Brightness, Lowest Reflectance, Highest Color Accuracy, Infinite Contrast Ratio, Highest Contrast Rating in Ambient Light, and smallest Brightness Variation with Viewing Angle. The Galaxy S5 has raised the bar for top display performance up by another notch –- an impressive achievement for OLED technology!

These records, of course, include any comparisons that DisplayMate has previously run against the iPhone.

There is one area where the iPhone and those using LCDs, rather than OLEDs, still reign supreme: absolute power efficiency. For example, the iPhone 5′s maximum display power is measured at 0.74W while the Galaxy S5′s is 1.50, more than twice that of the iPhone 5. Of course, that is not quite an apples-to-apples comparison, considering that the GS5 has nearly 3x the pixels and a far larger display.

However, DisplayMate added that the Galaxy S5 is 27 percent more power efficient than the Full HD LCD Smartphones the company recently tested for mixed image content (that includes photos, videos, and movies, for example). With this, DisplayMate said, OLEDs may pull ahead of LCDs in total power efficiency in the near future.
